If you’ve driven HGVs or managed a transport fleet, becoming a Driver CPC instructor is one of the most overlooked career moves in logistics — and the demand is consistent, predictable, and growing.
This guide covers exactly what’s involved, what you need, and the fastest route to getting started.
What is a Driver CPC instructor?
Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is the mandatory qualification every professional LGV and PCV driver in the UK must maintain. Drivers complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to keep their Driver Qualification Card (DQC) valid.
As an instructor, you deliver those sessions — typically seven-hour blocks covering topics like:
- Drivers’ hours rules and tachograph use
- Load safety and vehicle checks
- Road risk and health and safety
- Company and public image
There’s no pass or fail test for candidates. Your job is to deliver training that genuinely develops the drivers in the room.
Tens of thousands of UK drivers need to renew their DQC on a rolling five-year cycle. Once you build a client base, the work doesn’t stop.
What qualifications do you need?
To deliver Driver CPC training as an NLTC member, you need:
- Substantial experience in logistics, transport operations, or fleet management
- Subject knowledge in the topics you want to deliver
- A Level 3 teaching qualification or relevant teaching experience — NLTC requires this for all members
- Strong communication skills (you’ll be on your feet for seven hours)
Don’t have your Level 3 yet? RADAT’s CPC Train-the-Trainer course is DVSA-recognised and built specifically for logistics professionals — it’s the most direct route to getting qualified. Find out more about RADAT’s CPC Train-the-Trainer course.
How do you get DVSA approval?
To legally deliver Driver CPC training, you must operate through a DVSA-approved training centre. There are two routes:
Option 1: Apply independently
You apply directly to the DVSA to become your own approved centre. Each course needs a separate submission, including learning outcomes, session plans, and trainer evidence. It’s achievable — but it takes months and can stall easily if applications aren’t structured correctly.
Option 2: Join a consortium ✓ Recommended
A consortium holds DVSA approval centrally. Members deliver under that approval using pre-approved course materials — no individual submissions, no delays. Joining NLTC means:
- You’re approved and ready to deliver from day one
- You access a full library of pre-built, DVSA-approved course content
- Compliance admin and DVSA uploads are handled through the member portal
- You start trading weeks or months faster than going it alone
What can you earn as a Driver CPC instructor?
Fleet and employer accounts — where you’re putting multiple drivers through training each year — create a genuinely sustainable pipeline. The five-year DQC renewal cycle means the work keeps coming back.
The fastest route in: NLTC membership
NLTC is a DVSA-recognised approved training centre supporting logistics trainers across the UK. Membership gives you:
- A comprehensive library of pre-approved Driver CPC course modules
- Content written by logistics professionals — not generic compliance material
- A member portal for bookings, candidate tracking, and DVSA uploads
- Expert support navigating the approval process
- The ability to get trading significantly faster than the independent route
Common questions
Can I run Driver CPC training as a sole trader?
Yes. Many NLTC members operate as sole traders or small businesses. You don’t need to be a limited company to get started.
Do I need insurance?
Public liability insurance is essential. Professional indemnity insurance is strongly recommended.
Can I add other qualifications later?
Yes. Many NLTC members start with Driver CPC and expand into ADR, PDP, and other specialist logistics training as their business grows. A consortium with a broad qualification portfolio makes that progression straightforward.
How long does it take to get set up?
Through NLTC, considerably faster than going independent. The individual DVSA centre approval process can take several months; consortium membership removes that bottleneck entirely.
Ready to get started?
If you have the experience and you’re serious about building a training business, the main thing standing between you and delivering Driver CPC training is getting the right structure in place from the start.
